This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
