The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
