Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction implies that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
