European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
